Is Massage a Luxury or a Necessity?

Many people think of massage as a luxury or an indulgence, a treat that we allow ourselves on occasion. Massage therapy is a deeply relaxing treatment, perfect for someone who wants time out for themselves. But, the long-term benefits of regular massage treatments can have a profound effect on a person’s health and well-being.

Living with pain in the body is a reality for a lot of people, for many different reasons. Pain can be severe and chronic, or it can be mild most of the time with occasional flare-ups. Some people have pain that they grow accustomed to and live with despite the restriction in movement it causes. Many clients will know exactly where in their body they hold tension, the shoulders and neck being very common areas. The relief that is felt after a massage therapy session is immediately evident. While one session is beneficial, the body does take time to let go of tension that has built up over time. Regular sessions every two or three weeks in the short term are recommended in this case with quantifiable benefits experienced such as having unrestricted movement and being pain-free as examples. Regular monthly sessions are then recommended as maintenance to ensure that pain doesn’t build up in the body as before.

What about the emotional benefits of regular massage treatments? As we know, the body and mind are inextricably linked, they are not separate from each other. When we work on the body we also work on the mind. Massage therapy works on the central nervous system in the body to reduce cortisol - our stress hormone, to increase serotonin and dopamine - our ‘happy’ and calming hormones and to increase endorphins which gives us an overall sense of well-being. Stress is one of the major contributors to chronic disease and while we can’t remove stress completely from our lives we can manage our stress effectively. Regular massage treatments have been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, to aid restful sleep and to calm the nervous system. The reality is that clients just feel better in themselves, which then benefits all aspects of their lives.

At Solace Holistic Centre we tailor our treatments to suit each client. Life is full of ups & downs and each day brings new challenges. Whatever we go through on a daily basis is reflected in the body. The benefits of massage therapy are cumulative and much more effective when received regularly. The more consistent you receive a massage the better you will feel. It is something that is well worth investing in for a healthy future.
